The Student Life Unit

The mission of the Student Life Unit is to help students settling in, and their daily life in the Brussels Region.

Why is there a Student Life Unit?

In 2019, more than 100,000 students were enrolled in higher education institutions in Brussels, thereby contributing to the dynamism of the Region. The Student Life Unit was set up within perspective.brussels to respond to the needs and expectations of this target group in various areas: daily life, housing, equipment, mobility, etc.

The activities of the Student Life Unit

The Student Life Unit is the Brussels body that ensures the link with students pursuing their higher education in the Region. Thanks to the creation of an information desk and a trilingual website, it

• informs students about daily life in Brussels;
• helps promote Brussels as a student region;
• facilitates the development of public services and facilities for students;
• raises awareness among and encourages the student target group to get involved in issues such as sustainable food, mobility and employment.

The Student Life Unit works in close collaboration with the actors of the Brussels higher education system and associations concerned with the daily life of students in Brussels, in the context of an Expertise Committee.

The Expertise Committee

The Student Life Unit has set up an Expertise Committee, responsible for proposing an action plan to the regional government every 5 years.

The Committee is made up of:

•  representatives of French-speaking higher education (universities, colleges of higher education, arts and social education), appointed by the Pôle Académique de Bruxelles;
•  a representative of the non-profit association Brik;
•  a representative of the non-profit association Student Housing Platform (Plateforme Logement étudiant);
•  d’un représentant de l’asbl Brik ;
•  a representative of the Government of the Brussels-Capital Region.

In parallel to the Expertise Committee, a Liaison Committee will bring together representatives of the French Community Commission (COCOF) and the Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie (VGC), the Ministry of the Walloon-Brussels Federation and the Flemish Administration in charge of education. Its objective will be to promote the cross-cutting aspect of the actions, and to exchange best practice in favour of students in Brussels.
